The hall:
The roof:
At the beginning of 2022, the owner contractually transferred the building to the Association le ventre for use on a loan basis. The condition for this is that it be used as a centre for the arts and socio-culture.
Responsibility for the conversion and renovation of the former synagogue remains with the owner, while responsibility for the concept and management of the operation remains with the associations. The two associations, Synagoge Hegenheim and le ventre, are supporting and assisting the owner in the implementation of the renovation and conversion plans.
In 2020, the owner concluded a funding agreement with the Haut-Rhin department, and the Grand Est region and the town of Hégenheim have granted a subsidy for the roof renovation.
The renovation work is being supervised by an architect, and the building application submitted was approved last year. The schedule envisages an official inauguration of the building in the first quarter of 2027.
The roof
Roof renovation began in spring 2021. The roof tiles were knocked off one by one, the intact ones were put back on the roof, and the damaged ones were replaced with intact old tiles. The same procedure was followed for the roof trusses. Dilapidated old beams were replaced with intact old beams. And in autumn, the roof shone in its old new splendour.
Work carried out
- The foundations in the entrance area were stabilised.
- Two toilets were installed under the stairs.
- Fire protection and insulation panels were installed in the attic.
- A new electrical network has been installed throughout the building.
- New water pipes and sewage pipes have been installed.
- A bathroom cubicle has been created in the attic. The first sleeping cubicle has also been fitted out.
- On the first floor, we have rebuilt a wall that used to separate the women's gallery from the school.
- A kitchen with a lounge area has been set up in the former school.
What is happening right now
- The windows are being restored, replaced where necessary and fitted with insulated glass.
- The hall floor has been excavated and Misopor insulation material has been poured in. Underfloor heating and a new wooden floor are to be installed.
- One unavoidable change to the existing structure is the opening that has already been made in the back side of the hall, which will serve as an emergency exit. To this end, an existing window has been enlarged downwards and converted into a passageway leading to an external extension with a disabled toilet, a shower and a technical room.
- The foundations for the external extension have been laid.
What still needs to be done
- In addition, a number of other tasks still need to be completed, such as the restoration of the woodwork on the balustrades, stairs and doors.
- The external walls will be renovated to their original condition, plastered with lime and painted with lime paint.
